Far off and at an impossible angle, a strange eclipse seems to hang in the sky and turn toward him, a distant alignment he barely registers, because the waves are more interesting. He wipes out on a rogue wave and swallows a tiny scarab-like object from the sea. It is no accident. The object is an alien transmitter: the heartbeat of a plan by The Driggs to claim Earth not through war but through silence. A saltwater-activated organism seeds the oceans and rises as an invisible vapor that targets the reproductive systems of human women, so that, generation by generation, birth simply stops and civilization thins into nothing. Pulled from a passenger plane into a Swarth recon ship and stranded on Dechura, a crystal-mining prison world where inmates carve the eclipse-aligned 'generator lenses,' Nile falls under the guidance of Ovid, a brilliant, brutal imprisoned strategist who reveals the horror inside Nile's own throat, and the cosmic clockwork of lenses, eclipses, and the Devil's Backbone that governs when the invaders can arrive. To save Helen, who The Swarth now holds, Nile and Ovid stage an audacious boarding raid, cut the transmitter free, and ride a black-hole time channel back to the very morning it all began, where Nile must out-think his own past self and rewrite the day before the door to extinction opens again.
